The Summer School “Egyptologists as museum curators: an immersive training” is an academic programme offered by the University of Pisa in collaboration with the Museo Egizio. The main objective of the School is to provide a theoretical and practical approach to ancient Egyptian objects as part of a collection. Every object is an accumulation of different stories, both ancient and modern, ranging from its production, use, deposition, discovery, up to its acquisition, conservation and display. The school will offer the unique opportunity to tackle Egyptian objects from all these different angles, from theoretical to more pragmatic perspectives, exposing participants to a variety of museum practices thanks to an immersive experience in a museum environment.

The final aim of the Summer School is to provide all participants with a foundation for starting more specific programmes of curatorial work in museums.
The courses will provide:

  1. an archaeological and historical framework for contextualizing objects in the Museo Egizio within the society that produced them;

  2. a multifaceted museological approach for contextualizing objects within the collection (acquisition history, cataloguing, handling, documentation, conservation, display, public engagement);

  3. an introduction to the current methods for investigating the museum objects.

  4. the basics for the design, organisation, and display of a museum room in an Egyptological collection.

The Summer School will run from 2nd September to 9th September 2019.

All courses will be taught  in English by leading experts of the University of Pisa and the Museo Egizio. No knowledge of Italian is required.

The deadline for submission of applications is 15th May 2019.  For more information click here.
