In the 1960s, following the construction of the Aswan dam, the Egyptian Museum was called to contribute to the campaign for the rescue of the temples of Nubia, which risked being submerged by the waters of Lake Nasser. The Egyptian government decided to donate the temple of Ellesiya to Italy in recognition of the country's participation in the vast rescue operation: the temple, after a complex transport and reconstruction operation inside the Museo Egizio, was presented in Turin at the presence of the Italian and Egyptian authorities in the autumn of 1970.

Fifty years later, the Museo Egizio celebrates this important anniversary: Monday, January 18th 2021, at 6pm. the museum will host the online conference "Ancient Nubia and Egypt: a story of mutual exchange and interaction", held by curators Paolo Del Vesco and Johannes Auenmüller.

Ancient Nubia and Egypt share a long history of economic, political and cultural contacts: the dialogue will highlight the relations and mutual influences characterizing these two regions during the New Kingdom, when the Ellesiya temple was built.

The conference will be held in English and will be broadcast via streaming on the Museum's Facebook page and Youtube channel.
