On Tuesday 17th June 2025, at 6.30 pm, in collaboration with ACME (Amici e Collaboratori del Museo Egizio) we will host a lecture  held by Alejandro Jimenez-Serrano (University of Jaén).

In 2008, the University of Jaén resumed archaeological excavations at Qubbet el-Hawa. The primary objectives of the new research project were to establish an interdisciplinary research team to study a specific group of tombs that had either never been excavated or were only partially explored: the funerary complexes of the 12th Dynasty in the necropolis, where the elite of Elephantine were buried. Over sixteen excavation seasons, the University of Jaén focused its efforts on the southeastern side of the hill, particularly on QH33, where we discovered the burial site of two governors from the late 12th Dynasty. Additionally, we excavated QH34, as well as the funerary apartments of Sarenput II in QH31 and QH32. On the northern side of the hill, we cleared QH35p and are in the process of completing the excavation of the funerary shafts of Sarenput I.

During these excavations in the southeastern area of Qubbet el-Hawa, several new tombs were discovered, many of which were still intact. These findings have allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of the necropolis' organization during the 12th Dynasty, as well as to identify some potentially local funerary customs reflected in these burials.

Alejandro Jiménez-Serrano is Professor of Egyptology and Archaeology of Ancient Near East in the University of Jaen. He got his speciality of Archaeology in the University of Jaen and his speciality in Egyptology in the University of London (UCL). Since 2008, he has been leading an interdisciplinary project in the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa (Aswan, Egypt). The main goals of this project have been the excavation of the 12th Dynasty tombs in this necropolis, some of which had never been excavated or had been partially excavated. The results of these researches are published in leading scientific journals and monographs as Results of the 2019 Research Season at Qubbet el-Hawa (edited together with other authors in UJA Editorial 2021). He is the author of other books as Descendants of a Lesser God. Regional Power in Old Middle Kingdom Egypt (AUC Press, 2023), in which he presents the history of the southernmost regions of Egypt and the surrounding territories during the Old and Middle Kingdom.

The lecture will take place in our Conference Room and it will be held in English.

Admission is free with a reservation on Eventbrite. Click HERE to book your place.

The lecture will be broadcast via streaming on the Museum's Facebook page and Youtube channel
