In 1966, the Ellesiya Rock Chapel, the oldest rock-cut temple in Nubia, arrived in Turin. Following the construction of the Aswan Dam, Italy and the Museo Egizio were called upon to contribute to UNESCO's campaign to save the temples of Nubia, which were at risk of being submerged by the waters of Lake Nasser.
As a gesture of gratitude for Italy's participation in the rescue operation, the Egyptian government decided to donate the temple to Italy. After a complex transportation and reconstruction process inside the Museo Egizio, the artifact was presented in Turin in the fall of 1970, in the presence of Italian and Egyptian authorities.
In 2023, the latest restoration of the Chapel began, involving the cleaning and consolidation of its surfaces by the Centro Conservazione Restauro La Venaria Reale. The Chapel was reinstalled thanks to the research and study efforts of Egyptologists and curators Johannes Auenmüller, Alessia Fassone, Paolo Marini, Beppe Moiso, and Tommaso Montonati.
As part of the celebrations for its bicentennial, on November 20, 2024, the Museo Egizio will grant free public access to the Chapel, with a dedicated entrance on Via Duse.
Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane is the Official Sponsor of the return of the Ellesiya Temple to the community, with contributions from the Fondazione CRT and the Consulta per la Valorizzazione Beni Artistici e Culturali di Torino, and with the participation of Ribes Digilab.
