From the basement to the archaeological fieldwork: rediscovering Deir el-Medina woodcraft from a comprehensive study

On Tuesday 30th November we will host a new lecture "From the basement to the archaeological fieldwork: rediscovering Deir el-Medina woodcraft from a comprehensive study." part of the programme organized in collaboration with ACME.
The French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo (IFAO) houses in its basement an important collection of objects, the vast majority of which are the result of excavations in the early 20th century.
Since 2017, the dozens of complete and fragmentary wooden objects of various periods and origins have been the subject of a comprehensive study combined with a vast restoration campaign. Initially carried out within the framework of the collaborative project PERCEA Bois (Projet d’Etude et de Restauration des Collections Egyptiennes Anciennes Bois - Ifao/ Institute of Archaeology UCL, London) between 2017 and 2018, the complete study of this collection, from the point of view of archaeometry as well as restoration-conservation and documentation, is now being carried out within the framework of the EBENES (Etude des Bois Egyptiens : Nature, Emplois, Sauvegarde) research programme, which brings together various international research institutions, archaeological missions and specialists in wood. In order to illustrate the work carried out within the framework of the EBENES programme, the wood discovered in the Theban necropolis will be the object of particular attention. We will go to the site of Deir el-Medina, where the woods rediscovered in the Ifao's cellars and in the field are being analysed thanks to the work of a team of six Egyptologists who are attempting to redraw a little-known craft landscape, that of wood in the New Kingdom, in close collaboration between the Ifao and the Museo Egizio in Turin.
Gersande Eschenbrenner-Diemer, is formerly Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Fellow at University College London (2026-2018), associate researcher at the ArScAN laboratory (CNRS-UMR 7041), she has just completed a postdoctoral research at the University of Jaén (ACCION 6 PLAN PROPIO DE INVESTIGACIÓN 2019-2021) under the direction of A. Jiménez-Serrano. She specialises in wood and its economic, artistic and social networks in Ancient Egypt on which she has published extensively. Combining knowledge of Egyptology and Archaeobotany, she collaborates as a wood specialist in several international archaeological missions in Egypt: Qubbet el-Hawa (Qubbet el-Hawa Project, University of Jaén), Elephantine (Swiss Institute in Cairo), Deir el-Medina (IFAO-Museo Egizio Turin), where she leads a team of researchers specialised in the study of wooden furniture, and the Royal Necropolis of the Western Wadis (University of Cambridge). She is currently Principal Investigator of the research program EBENES at the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo (IFAO) dedicated to wood and woodcraft on a diachronic perspective in collaboration with several international scientific partners (Museo Egizio, Turin, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, University College of London, University of Pisa). She is member of the MORTEXVAR project directed by C. Gracia Zamacona (University of Alcalá de Henares) and member of the RIIPOA Network (www.riipoa.com) as coordinator of the axis dedicated to Materiality.
