Materiality of Religious Practices: Female Figurines of the Museo Egizio

Female figurines are small statues—carved, hand-modeled, or mold-made—produced in a wide range of materials (raw or fired clay, wood, stone, faience, bone, or wax). Typically ranging in size from 2–3 to 30–40 centimeters, they are easily handled and transportable. These objects represent the image of a woman and were produced in antiquity by a variety of societies.

The project aims to study and interpret female figurines produced and used during the dynastic period that are now part of the Museo Egizio’s collection. This will be achieved through the creation of digital 3D models and the use of non-invasive analytical techniques. The project also includes the study of ancient Egyptian religious and cultic practices from the perspective of materials, objects, and gestures involved in these practices.
