The Diagonal Star Tables of Ancient Egypt: Corpus, Texts and Cosmology

Diagonal star tables are among the earliest astronomical documents of ancient Egypt. Arranged in a grid of twelve rows and thirty-six columns, they record the twelve hours of the night through the sequence of star groups known as decans: stars or constellations rising on the horizon at regular intervals of ten days, which the Egyptians used as a celestial clock to mark the passage of the night hours. The grid covers the entire solar year, from the heliacal rising of Sirius — whose reappearance at dawn heralded the Nile flood and, ideally, the renewal of life — to the completion of the following cycle.

These tables are best known as decoration on the inner face of coffin lids, a use attested in the 11th and 12th Dynasties, with examples coming primarily from Asyut and, more sporadically, from Thebes, Gebelein, and Aswan. The choice is not merely ornamental: by placing on the lid of their coffin the celestial sequence that marked the annual cycle of death and rebirth in nature, the deceased aspired to become part of that cycle and to share in its perpetual renewal.

Despite their importance for the history of Egyptian astronomy and religion, the corpus of diagonal star tables has not been the subject of a systematic revision since the publication of Otto Neugebauer and Richard Parker's Egyptian Astronomical Texts in the 1960s. Since then the corpus has grown: twenty-seven tables are now known, three of which are preserved at the Museo Egizio in Turin.

The project proposes the first updated systematic study of the entire corpus. The research develops and expands the findings of a doctoral dissertation on the subject (Ferraris, “Oggetti celesti e culti stellari nella documentazione figurativa e testuale egiziana”, 2011), integrating philological, iconographic, and archaeometric analysis with new photographic campaigns and digital surveys of the examples held at the Museo Egizio.

The project’s main objective is the production of the first complete, updated publication of the corpus of the 27 known diagonal star tables, based on direct re-examination of the artifacts and documentation conducted according to current scientific standards. This systematic revision aims to update the textual, iconographic, and material documentation of the tables, providing a renewed critical foundation for the study of one of the earliest systems of representing the sky in ancient Egypt.

Building on this reconstruction of the corpus, the project also seeks to broaden the scope of investigation beyond individual objects, exploring the natural and cosmological context underlying their creation. The star tables will thus be analyzed as expressions of a broader cultural system, in which observation of the sky, perception of the natural landscape, and funerary practices contribute to shaping a specific representation of time and the cosmos.

From this perspective, the project aims to highlight how the sequences of decans and the structure of the tables reflect not only a method for measuring nighttime, but also a particular symbolic organization of the sky and the natural world within Egyptian cosmology.

The project is structured around two main research axes:

Documentation and Analysis of the Corpus: The research aims to produce an updated and consistent documentation of the entire corpus of diagonal star tables. Work begins with the three tables preserved at the Museo Egizio in Turin (Suppl. 15744, Suppl. 8877, and fragment Provv. 4084) and progressively extends to examples held in major international collections. The documentation integrates multiple disciplinary approaches: epigraphic and philological study of the texts, iconographic analysis of celestial representations, high-resolution photographic documentation and advanced imaging, as well as archaeometric investigations of materials and painting techniques. These data are contextualized within the archaeological setting of the coffins and the funerary and religious practices of the Middle Kingdom.

Cultural and Cosmological Interpretation: The systematization of this documentation enables analysis of the star tables as a point of convergence between astronomical observation, religious concepts, and symbolic representations of the natural world. The names of the decans—evoking animals, objects, body parts, and spiritual figures—reveal how the Egyptians projected elements of their natural and cultural landscape onto the sky, transforming observation of the firmament into an integrated cosmological representation.

The project foresees the realization of a reference scientific monograph with the first updated complete publication of the corpus of diagonal star tables, more than sixty years after Egyptian Astronomical Texts Vol. 1 by Neugebauer and Parker, including a critical edition of the texts, new iconographic documentation, and a comparative analysis of the entire corpus. At the same time, a digital atlas of the diagonal star tables will be developed, an online platform with high-resolution images, transcriptions, analytical data, and consultation tools dedicated to the study of the decans and Egyptian astronomical traditions. The project also includes a scientific project for an international exhibition dedicated to the sky and the measurement of time in ancient Egypt, with the star tables as the narrative focus.
