Ernesto Schiaparelli’s first journeys to Egypt took place between 1884 and 1901: two during his tenure as director of the Egyptian section of the Archaeological Museum of Florence, and a third undertaken on behalf of the museum in Turin. During these travels, Schiaparelli visited numerous sites along the Nile, studying monuments, copying and photographing inscriptions and scenes, acquiring antiquities, and conducting small-scale excavations.
The project aims to achieve a comprehensive reconstruction of Ernesto Schiaparelli’s early journeys to Egypt and to situate them within the historical, political, and social contexts of Egypt and Italy at the time. At the same time, the documentation produced by the Egyptologist contains valuable information about the state of preservation of many monuments and tombs prior to more recent alterations or destruction.
